Getting Stabbed over Shutter Island

The new equation:
+ =

When I was running through the old pages of The Movie Blog, I came across a post whose title itself sent my eyes rolling: Man is Stabbed for Complaining about talking Movie Patron. What the? What is this all about? How come a person got himself stabbed just over a slight problem like that? To solely satisfy my curiosity, I then looked for the complete news and found it from the LA Times. Apparently the case happened over a minor problem--just as the title suggested--which is the problem that never ceases to happen: Talking on cellphone during a movie show at a cinema. It started when a man complained about a woman--who was accompanied by two men--during the screening of Shutter Island on a Saturday evening. The woman and the two men soon left the cinema but the two men returned and stabbed the man in the neck with a meat thermometer.

The first thing that pops out to somebody's head after reading this must be how worthless someone's life has become these days (besides the other million dollar question: Why would someone bring a meat thermometer to a cinema?). I don't like you, I don't like what you did, so I'm going to stab you in the neck. It is as simple as that. But I am not here to talk about the moral--our teachers and politicians have talked a lot about it and I don't think I can talk more or better than them.

I am more interested to look at the cause of the stabbing in the first place. It was caused by a problem we are all so tired of: Manner at the cinema. Nowadays, people who go to the cinema don't really follow the manner they should have. The rules in the cinema are simple: No cellphone, no talking, no disturbing others who want to watch. However, in the real process, only some of us seem to care enough to follow these rules. How often do we hear the ring of a cellphone during a movie? (They make cellphones with excellent feature nowadays: Silent mode!) How often do we hear people talking or even chatting loudly? Sometimes they don't even bother to whisper! Yes, it happens a lot and it doesn't show any symptoms of getting better. Seriously now, I don't think that these kinds of people really want to watch the movie. They only need a place to hang out and they believe the cinema is one of the many places for it--plus they don't even care if others are disturbed by them. For these people, they should really just stay at home or hang out at a cafe somewhere else.

When you want to swim, you go to the swimming pool. When you want to read, you go to the library. When you want to talk, you go to some place quiet. A cinema might be quiet, but it is certainly not a place for talking.

Online Media Beats Television?

Reading At the movies is canceled after 24 seasons, I realize one important thing: The television industry is cruel. It doesn't matter whether a show has aired for so long--in this case, 24 years--or how many people still watch the show regularly, if a show is considered 'no longer sustainable', then it will surely come to an end. The show, At The Movies started airing in 1986 and since then has been the place for people to find out which movie they are about to see in the cinema. However, it is true that the world has changed a lot in 24 years. The world as we know now has the most powerful thing: The Internet. We can now find anything that we need just by a click of a mouse. From a click, we can find the trailer and review of the movies we want to see and that is one of the reasons the show is coming to an end.

I am one of the people who use and depend on the internet more than television when it comes to finding information. Honestly, i don't watch movie reviews on TV anymore, but I practically grew up watching it. Well, if we look a few years back, the internet was not really that famous yet and watching TV is the best way to get updated. The present, however, of course can not be compared to the past; but if you ask me, not all people use the internet like i do. There are some people who depend so much on TV for information and we must always look at everything from both sides. For those who use the internet, they can use it for all they care; and for those who prefer television, they should be provided with a decent show for their consideration. Ending At The Movies might be the best way out from the business perspective, but it might not be so for the show's loyal viewers. Well, that is how industry works, isn't it? Sustainable you go, unsustainable you're gone.

Green Zone

Remember a few years back when all the news was about Iraq? Remember the WMD (Weapon of Mass Destruction) which became the reason of the war? Remember of all the issues when the WMD was never found? Well, if you do remember, then this movie might be a good option for you to refresh your memory. For those of you who don't remember-maybe because you were still too young or didn't even care about what was happening in the world at that time-this movie might be informative for you, or might even be entertaining.

The movie portrays a Chief Warrant Officer, Roy Miller (Matt Damon) who heads a unit of WMD search in Iraq in 2003. Basically this WMD unit's job is to find and raid the sites suspected of storing WMD from the intel provided to them. However, after several cases of misleading intel where the unit finds absolutely nothing from the assigned sites, Miller starts to doubt the reliability of the intel and of course, his suspicion is right. Like most people at that time, when you find nothing at all at the suspected sites, you will start to wonder if there really is WMD in Iraq, if the whole WMD issue is just a make-believe story for a reason to go to war. Putting his mind to really find out what is really going on in Iraq, Miller then sets out, works with Martin Brown (Brendan Gleeson) from CIA, and disobeys his orders to just raid the ordered sites.

The movie then will take us on Miller's fight to do the right thing when everything that has happened is wrong. His journey to the truth is packed in a non-stop suspense despites the shaky camera shoot in which the director, Paul Greengrass is known for. If you have watched the last two of Bourne movies (Bourne Supremacy, Bourne Ultimatum), you will be used to this kind of camera angles by now. But if you haven't, then it will take some time for you to get used to it. Overall, the movie's strong point is the value that it has. It screams out the facts and questions that we have had all this time about the war in Iraq. Some will say that it is a propaganda to cross the American government in the face, but doesn't the movie just state what's been on our mind all this time? The director and scriptwriter have done a great job mixing the fact with the fiction and the movie itself have the right thrill and suspense to make us stay on the edge of our seat along its duration. Matt Damon himself shows that he has really adopted the sense of a soldier. In the end, it is a good movie to spend your time with in the weekend. It is a bit heavy in the head but it is also quite entertaining, so why not go and judge it by yourself?

Are We No Better Than Dogs?

Nothing beats a day off in the weekend. After a few days of simultaneous study, work, and activities, weekend will look like the perfect escape for all of us. Among the activities to do in the weekends, watching a movie will surely offer a nice refill of energy. However, for us men, watching a movie about a dog seems a bit lame, isn't it? Well, at least that was what i think when a friend of mine asked me to watch Hachiko: A Dog's Story with her. Very reluctant to see the movie, i went and see it anyway and I was surprised because the movie-despite of its simple directing and budgeting-has such a strong social value in it.

Hachiko: A Dog's Story is a remake from a 1987 movie titled Hachiko Monogatari. The plot of the movie is actually very simple. It tells a story of a dog and its master, united by fate and live their lives together afterward as friends. The dog-named Hachiko after the Japanese writing hanging from his collar-would accompany his master to the train station in the morning when he goes to work and pick him up at the station in the evening when he comes home. People living or working near the station have been used to the scene that they stop asking questions how the master trains his dog. Fate that brings them together and it is also fate that delivers them the cruel good bye. The master soon dies because of a heart attack and Hachi loses his only point in life. Hachi then keeps showing up at the station every day at the exact time he awaited his master everyday when he was still alive. He keeps doing this for the next 10 years through the rain, the heat, and the snow until he dies waiting for his master to return. Even if you are the coolest person on earth losing half of your empathy, I am sure that this movie can still make you touched. In case some of you are wondering where you have heard the story before, it is a true story from Japan. The real Hachiko died in 1935 in Japan. A statue of Hachiko was then built at the Shibuya Station where he waited for his master all his life.

After watching the movie, I immediately felt so small compared to the dog. The dog can be so loyal to his master even when he is no longer alive. I can't even imagine myself-or even others that I know- to be loyal to someone even when that person is still alive. Our society has become so mobile that I don't think anyone can spend his life committed to only one thing, one job, or even one lover. There are even more qualities in a dog that if you think about it makes you think how small us humans have become. Dogs care for their owner unconditionally. When we are down, they can understand us and even try to cheer us up. What about us humans? How many times have we shoved our friends and families aside for better options? How many times have we ignored others to get what we want? Can we say that we care for others better than we care for ourselves? If we can not say yes to all these questions, then i guess we are no better than dogs after all, are we?

Heroes Season 4: The Aftermath

Heroes Season 4

Going to Season 4, the fans of this show-including me-have high expectations towards the new season. Of course, the expectations are for the show to be back on its track, to be like the first season, to correct the wrongs that it has done (sounds like Hiro, eh?). I have just finished watching the final episode of season 4 and it's time to look and match our expectations with what the show gives. This section contains spoilers, so for those who hate spoilers please just skip this article. Without further ado, let's dissect this season of Heroes...

This season falls under Volume 5 of the Heroes storyline with the title Redemption. The show introduces us with some new faces, new characters, and one character standing out the most would be Robert Knepper who is familiar with us since his role in Prison Break. Robert Knepper plays the role of Samuel Sullivan, a leader of a carnival known as The Sullivan Bros. Carnival.

Samuel Sullivan (Robert Knepper) and The Sullivan Bros. Carnival

The 2-hour special first episode of the season starts of with the scene of Samuel Sullivan and his carnival crews burying someone who is called Joseph. It appears that Joseph is Samuel's brother. It is shown in this funeral that Samuel uses his power to move the earth, thus burying his late brother and his coffin deep in the ground. Then we will also see how our 'heroes' are doing now. Claire Bennet is trying to fit in -as always-as she enters her college life. Peter Petrelli tries his best to be a 'hero' by working as a paramedic and using his power to help him save people. Hiro Nakamura and Ando Masahashi open a 'Superhero for Hire' agency. Noah Bennet tries to live a normal life and move on with his life after his divorce. Nathan Petrelli (who is actually Sylar) gets confused with his body as he has the body of Sylar with Nathan's memory. Angela Petrelli can not forget the fact that even though she really loves his son, Nathan, deep inside he is still Sylar. Tracy Strauss tries to get back to her old life. Matt Parkman lives a life of living hell as it turns out that Sylar's memory is trapped inside his own head. I hope I have mentioned all of the leading characters because we all know that the show has become like 'this' because of the vast-growing characters without further development.

The main storyline of this season revolves around Samuel Sullivan and his ambition to gather people with abilities to join his carnival. Later on the show, it is revealed that the reason behind Samuel's act to gather so many people with powers is because he becomes more powerful with the more 'special' people gather around him. Throughout the series, Samuel shows many different sides of him to the people around him. We can see him doing very despicable things but we can also see his romantic and melancholic side as we learn that the reason for everything he has done is to be with his childhood love. However, he soon learns that he can not always get what he wants and the world doesn't really welcome people like him and his carnival crews. These kinds of twisted perception and hurt will then lead him to a resolution: Show the world that 'special' people exist and they can do things so scary that the world need to fear them.

However, Samuel is not the only threat because there is also the threat of Sylar gaining his body and mind back. Sylar's mind is trapped in Matt Parkman's head all this time and it has grown quite powerful as it eventually gains the power to control Matt's body and at last return to his respected body. Peter has to learn to accept Nathan's death and move on with it. Even after returning to his own body, Sylar can't help but feel that he is missing out on something in his life. He then learns that he is afraid to die alone which then leads to his conclusion: He wants to change and be a new man. For all of you out there who always like Sylar as a super-villain, you will not like this part of story where he decides to redeem himself (but the volume's title says it all: Redemption, guys!). On the last episode of Season 4, he even says a line which i don't think i will ever forget: "I am a hero". Yes, he really says it as he tries to save the world along with Peter, fighting Samuel and his plans. The final fight with Samuel however, is not as I hoped and imagined. I was hoping for a greater and longer battle to end the season finale.

Volume 6 : Brave New World

The beginning of volume 6 takes off with Claire-who has been having trouble trying to fit-in to the world of 'normal' people-decides to stop pretending that she is 'normal' and shows the world that she is 'special'. After the fight with Samuel, the press is all over the place and knowing this, Claire climbs a Ferris Wheel and jumping-off of it to fall directly to the ground. As expected, she is back on her feet in no time and heals instantly. This is of course seen by the press and the people around there and this will definitely lead to a Brave New World. At least Sylar thinks and says so.

New Characters

Here are some of the new faces in this season of Heroes:

Samuel Sullivan (Robert Knepper)

Ability: Control earth and other minerals, manipulate ink.

He has the power to manipulate earth which means he can even move mountains where ever he wants it to. It is a very powerful power, but his power will only manifest if he is around others with powers. Well then, you can guess his weakness, can't you?

Lydia (Dawn Olivieri)

Ability: Show people's hopes and desires through her tattoos.

Emma Coolidge (Deanne Bray)

Ability: See sound as colours, use music to call anyone she wants, use sound and convert it to a physical form of attack.

Edgar (Ray Park)

Ability: Move with super speed

Eli (Todd Stashwick)

Ability: Replicate clones of himself

Damien (Harry Perry III)

Ability: Show, manipulate memories.

Will there be a next season of Heroes? It is not confirmed yet, but even if there will be Season 5, i am hoping for an improvement of the storyline. Return the excitement of Season 1 and ratings will surely increase as well. The show still has potential because even though critics are flying away, people still watch the show anyway. We sure like superheroes, don't we?

Are they 'Lost'?

Recognize any similarities between the two pictures? I don't think I need to explain about the picture on the right, as it is a picture from a famous TV series, Lost. What about the picture on the right? It is the official poster of a Sinetron (Electronic Cinema) from Indonesia titled 'Terdampar' (translated as 'Stranded' or 'Deserted' in English). Sinetron or Electronic Cinema is more likely known by the name TV Series or Soap Opera. The first episode of this sinetron was aired on March 8th 2010, at 8 p.m.

Apparently the poster is not the only thing similar between them, they are reported to share (almost) the same storyline and even characters. The complete article about this can be read here and please do read it! I really like Lost, even though some say that the quality of the storyline has changed and taken a deep dive, i will still support it and that is why i will defend it with all my might. Creativity is something really valuable and hard to generate and that is why hijacking others' ideas should never be allowed! Get your own idea, guys!

The Wolfman

Roaaar!!

We always like Werewolves and Draculas, and that is one of the reasons I picked this movie to watch when I went to the cinema the other day. I have seen the movie's trailer before and it looked pretty good at that time. The wolfman itself is actually a remake from a 1941 classic horror movie. Check out the poster comparison between the 1941 version and today's version below:

Well, they look very different, don't they? It's nice to see where technology can take us now. Aside from the obvious difference in the Visual Effects technology, the plot has also been modified to meet the expectations of this era.

The story opens up with the death of a man named Ben Talbot who was attacked by a vicious animal-like creature in the Blackmoor woods. It is then clear to us that Ben was the brother of Lawrence Talbot (Benicio del Toro), a theatre actor who gets the news of his brother's death from the fiancee (Emily Blunt). Lawrence then decides to come and stay in Blackmoor to find out who or what killed his brother.

Upon investigating his brother's death, he soon hears rumors about the existence of a so-called 'foul' or 'cursed' creatures that comes out when the moon is full and can only be killed with silver bullets (it's a Werewolf, of course!). The villagers suspects that all of the murders happened in Blackmoor was caused by the Gypsies, which then leads Lawrence to visit the Gypsies' camp to ask some questions about his brother. When he is at the camp, fate has arranged him to meet with the creature causing so much ruckus. The creature obliterates the camp and kills so many in the process.Lawrence goes to chase the creature just to end up being bitten on the neck. The strange thing about the wound is that it heals so fast even though the doctor thinks that he will not make it. We all know why he heals that fast, don't we? The story must go like this because we must use poison to fight poison, thus we must become a werewolf to fight another werewolf. Is it that predictable?

During his investigations, we will also learn about what happened to young Lawrence that makes him live apart separately from his family. It turns out that one night, young Lawrence found his mother dead in the arms of his father. She seemed to try to end her own life. He was then locked up in an Asylum for around a year. Lawrence has even more problems when the police and villagers hear about his 'magically' healed wounds and decided to catch and kill him. Up to this point, all of the puzzles needed to solve the mystery in this movie are on the table. Do you think you can solve it? Who is the first werewolf that killed the villagers and Ben Talbot in the first place? What will happen to Lawrence in the end? Well, i bet most of you guys can figure it out easily. Interesting twists are provided near the end of the movie and don't worry because I will not spoil it for you. This piece of writing is spoiler-free.

Overall, the movie is quite entertaining. If you like Werewolves, this is a movie you should see. It has cool effects, Benicio del Toro is a good choice to play a werewolf, and the transformation is also satisfying to me. However, if you are the type of guy who can't stand blood and gore, there are some scenes you would like to avoid seeing in the movie. After all, it is rated R for its blood and violence.

My Name is Khan

I know some of you out there don’t really consider Bollywood movies as something to be expected every weekend at the cinema, but this particular movie has been receiving quite the buzz to make me curious about it. Critics have mixed reviews about this movie and it has broken box office records during its opening weekend. Getting curious as well? You can check out the trailer here. The trailer at first glance is pretty moving, and my favorite part is when the main character said “My name is Khan and I’m not a terrorist”.

The cast supporting this movie includes Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol. Both of them are well-known for their collaboration in lots of movies and they are reunited once again in this movie. The movie dwells in the idea about an Indian family, a Muslim family, living in The United States, with the last name of Khan who experienced a lot of changes in their life after the 9/11 incidents. It shows the discrimination, the prejudice, the change in how people treat them and look at them. These changes then set a course for the main character to a journey where he wants to meet the president of The United States to say that his name is Khan and he is not a terrorist. I really look forward to watching this one as I think it is interesting to see how The United States is from the eye of other country. Besides, this kind of theme is rare and usually avoided because some people think that it bears a sensitive issue.
If you happen to have watched the movie please share your thoughts here. What do you personally think about it? I will write the review about the movie here as soon as I watch it, but until then, I hope this piece of preview will make do. Ferry, signing off!

TV Series Worth Watching

Well, most of us spend our 'free' time doing things which can make us relaxed and let our nerves loose before going back to our daily activities. One of the many activities can be done is indeed watching TV (with a bucket of popcorn and a jug of coke ready beside us, of course). I thought I would list down some of my favourite TV shows that are worth watching, at least to me. Some of the TV shows have lost their edge due to their long run throughout these years and i keep watching them just because i have spent so many countless hours watching the shows from their first season. So, here are my picks:

CSI (Crime Scene Investigation)

Season: 10 (on going)

Cast: Marg Helgenberger, George Eads, Eric Szmanda, Paul Guilfoyle, Robert David Hall, Wallace Langham, Laurence Fishburne, David Berman, Liz Vassey.

Genre: Crime

It is the first series to introduce us to detailed forensics which were a breakthrough in its time. Too bad that William Petersen had to leave in the middle of season 9, but Laurence Fishburne as his replacement has brought new wind to the series even though it is still hard to shake off Grissom's image from the last 9 seasons. If you are interested in high-tech forensics and crime series, this is one show you need to see. Just look at the number of seasons the show has!

House M.D.

Season: 6 (On Going)

Cast: Hugh Laurie, Lisa Edelstein, Omar Epps, Robert Sean Leonard, Jennifer Morrison, Jesse Spencer, Peter Jacobson, Olivia Wilde

Genre: Medical Drama

House M.D. is not your regular medical drama TV series, as it introduced us to Dr. House, a doctor beyond explanation by words. He is the Head of The Diagnostic Department, he never wears his white doctor robe, he walks with a cane, he doesn't shave, he takes painkillers all the time, and he uses controversial method in treating his patients. Those are more than enough reasons for me to watch this 'brilliant' doctor.

Heroes

Season: 4 (Completed), awaiting Season 5

Genre: Superhero, Action, Drama

Cast: Milo Ventimiglia, Hayden Panettiere, Masi Oka, James Kyson Lee, Ali Larter, Jack Coleman, Zachary Quinto, Greg Grunberg, Robert Knepper.

Who doesnt love the first season of Heroes? It was what everyone talked about at that time, but that was 4 years ago. Since then, the show has experiences lots of ups and downs, and reluctantly i have to admit that its next seasons really can not match its first. However, i am still watching the show with my fingers crossed, hoping for improvement (still hoping). They introduced new villain in season 4 whom i believe is very familiar to the eyes of TV viewers, Robert Knepper. We all know him through his annoying role of a villain in Prison Break, and now he is back with 'powers'! Regardless of the degrading quality of the show, i still love superheroes and my hope is always high for this show.

Smallville

Season: 9 (On Going)

Cast: Tom Welling, Erica Durance, Allison Mack, Cassidy Freeman, Justin Hartley, Callum Blue

Genre: Superhero, Action, Drama

Superman! The American icon of superhero is indeed the most popular superhero character that we know of. That is why Smallville has caught my attention since the first time it aired (for your information, that would be around 9 years ago). How can we forget the opening of the series where we see the meteor shower hits Smallville which marks the arrival of an incredible hero? The show takes us to the story of Superman before he was Superman, a story of a young boy growing up, facing all his teenager issues to evolve into the man of steel himself. The first four seasons were very interesting to me, as the whole concept of Superman without his costume and most of his undeveloped-powers really caught my attention. We get to see Superman as a normal boy, trying to be loved, to impress people that he loves, and how everything can not always go as we all want it to be. On this show, we can see the human side of Superman in Clark Kent. Well, at least that was what I feel when Papa Kent and Mama Kent were still in the show. Without them around, I guess the show just lost its family, homey touch, but a boy has to grow eventually, doesn't he? The show has definitely lost its touch compared to its first few seasons, but i still watch the show anyway. I have spent so many years watching it that i can't find myself not watching it. Hope it gets its touch back, though.

Prison Break

Season: 4 (End)

Cast: Wenthworth Miller, Dominic Purcell, Sarah Wayne Callies, Amaury Nolasco, Jodi Lyn O'Keefe, William Fichtner, Robert Knepper, Wade Williams, Michael Rapaport.

Genre: Drama

This is one of my favourite TV shows. The story evolves around Michael Scofield (Wentworth Miller), a genius structural-engineer who tries to break his brother out of prison because he thought that his brother was framed for the crime he did not do. He tattooed his body with the prison's blue print and covered it with other tattoos so that it would look just like ordinary tattoos. It is really fascinating to see how Scofield has planned everything to break out of the prison, but surely everything can not always go as planned which makes the show quite unpredictable. The show ended in season 4 with 2 additional episodes known as The Final Break to tie all the loose ends up. I considered ending the show there as a good idea because they have actually managed to break out of the prison in the first season! Luckily they (producers and network) realized it too and decided to tie everything up in the 4th season--I don't like the ending, though. Anyway, this is one great TV series to watch and i wouldn't mind recommending it to anyone i know.

Lost

Season: 6 (On Going-Last season)

Cast: Matthew Fox, Evangeline Lily, Jorge Garcia, Terry O'Quinn, Josh Holloway, Naveen Andrews, Daniel Dae Kim, Yunjin Kim, Henry Ian Cusick, Michae Emerson.

Imagine yourself to be flying on a plane and it suddenly crashes to an island, and it is not just an ordinary island. There is something about the mysterious island...
Yes, that is the main plot of this show. When i watched the pilot episode of the show, i was so intrigued by so many questions it could provide and make me puzzled just from watching the first episode. I ended up thinking about all the questions, guessing up all the answers and those are the elements that make the show worth watching. That is why this is one TV series not to be missed, guys! The mysteries will keep you on your seat and addicted to it as well. However, as the years gone by and the seasons keep stacking up, the island has become less mysterious, but that is what always happen to TV shows, isn't it? High ratings demand for more seasons, and more seasons demand for more plots, and just how many good plots can be generated from the existing plot? The good thing is, this season is announced to be the last and final season for Lost and as a big fan, I am very grateful that it would not suffer the agony of losing its main plot and become a joke just to make it runs longer and longer. This season seems to be improving too, and I am hoping for a good wrap-up to end this wonderful show.

Well, those are the Top 6 of my favourite, worth-watching TV Series. I tried to make it just the Top 5, but i found it so hard to do. There are other TV Series worth-watching of course, but i don't want to bore you guys with too many options now. I will write more of them in my following posts. Until then, I would totally understand if you want to prepare yourself for a marathon watching CSI, Lost, or maybe House M.D. See you in my next post.

The New Tenants

Overall, this year's Academy Awards have been the battle between Avatar and The Hurt Locker. Each of them has their own fans and honestly I can't really make up my mind too. But maybe, and this is just maybe, when we compare something grandeur like Avatar-with the support of enormous budget with another movie which doesn't have such enormous budget, our subconsciousness will stand on the weaker side automatically. At least that is what happened to me most of the time, and i believe it might be different for others, so how about you guys? What do you think? Feel free to leave some comments! See you next year for another round of the Oscars then. ^^
