It will be odd if I am going to review movies without reviewing one of the best movies from last year, Avatar. I know it’s pretty out of date to be reviewing the movie now, not to mention all the reviews it has publicly received all over the world. But, I just have to say something about this one and I won’t say too much. Well, anyhow, the movie’s quality lies on its use of advanced technology to create a whole alternate planet so much different than our world--but I won’t talk about the technology here because so many reviews have done that--along with a simple yet strong engaging storyline to wrap the whole movie nicely.

The movie introduces another planet aside earth named Pandora. This planet is so exotic with lots of other life forms living on it. The natives on this planet are called the Na’vis and they are said to be very hostile towards humans. Our main character is Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), a disabled ex-marine who was sent to Pandora to replace his late twin brother in the Avatar project. The Avatar project is a project where the scientists created a biological body made from the combined DNA of the Na’vis and humans. The biological body then can be controlled by humans just by connecting their consciousness to the body. Jake was merely chosen because he shares almost similar DNA to his late brother (well of course, they are twins!). By using the Avatars, the humans hope that they can understand the natives better and maybe they all can have an understanding towards each other. What humans actually want from this planet is the rare mineral which resides in the land occupied by the Na’vis and considered as their home, which explains the main reason of their hostility. Who wouldn’t be angry when somebody just kicks you out of your own home?

Jake’s first experience connecting with his avatar makes him so ecstatic because he can walk now, it’s like he was given a second chance in life and this makes him so enthusiastic. We will then be taken deep further into the world of Pandora, meeting the exotic plants and creatures as Jack and his scientist friends travel to collect more data of the planet’s life forms. His eagerness however, is challenged when he gets separated from his friends, leading him to an encounter with a female native, Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) who takes him into her family and friends. They then fall in love. But, their road of love is not easy. They are very much different and Jake has to learn a lot about Neytiri’s world and her traditions. It is hard for him at first, but he has managed to overcome what he needs to do. During the process, Jake started to think that his life as one of the Na’vis’ is his “real” life and what is supposed to be his real life; he thought that is only a “dream”.

When everything seems to be in line for both of them, problems start to close in, the humans--lead by the head of security, a war-loving maniac--can’t wait any longer to get their hands on the precious mineral. Therefore, they decided to launch an attack to the natives’ home. The part that I really like about this movie is the irony of it: What will Jack do as he is trapped between the fight? Will he choose his ‘real’ life or his ‘dream’? Are humans really that depraved? Is that what we always do when we see other people who don’t share the same skin as us? Do we demolish everything that stands on our way just because we think that we are the more superior beings? When I think about all of that, I realize how realistic and yet ironic the basic storyline of the movie is. Moreover, the movie also explores the basic human nature and challenges it in a way that makes it even sad. It is how the world now goes. Do we even realize how many wars had happened just because of this simple problem? How power reigns over common sense? This is a non-fiction movie guys and I really like how James Cameron put it all in this movie. How is it end then? I will not spoil it by writing it here guys; you just have to watch it for yourself. Hi, there! Welcome to my very first blog. Well, to say the first may seem like there will be more sequels to come. But really, this blog here is my first where I am pretty much clueless about blogging. So, what is the reason for me creating this blog? Why even bother doing things that I am not good at? The answer is so simple. I am doing this because it is a compulsory assignment for my study, and who knows, maybe I have a hidden potential in writing, but honestly that is for you to decide; so your comments are very welcome here. Please stop by anytime and leave some comments. In that case, I know that my writing is at least read by someone out there. Hopefully, I will be much a better blogger when my study finishes later. But, until then, please bear with me.

Alright, let me indulge you all with the reason behind the theme chosen for this blog. When I found out the first time that a blog would need to be created as a part of my study, the second theme that popped out in my head was ‘movies’. What about the first theme popped out? It would be ‘video game’. However, I had to admit that I am not that young anymore, and I have a lot of things going around in my studies which mean that I will not be able to review and play all the games out there in time. I still play video game occasionally to unload my stress, but still, time is the only enemy against the first theme here. Then the next best option here must be movies because who doesn’t go to the cinemas in the weekend? Who doesn’t watch TV at home? I know that I am not a world-renown critic, but at least I have my own opinion and it might be subjective. Though, I can surely write whatever I want in my own blog.

The theme chosen for my blog work may seem light, fun and all-entertainment-related, but I assure you, there will be a serious one, as its seriousness is one of the main requirements for my study. To be exact, my blog will not only talk about movies. I will also talk about TV series around the world, from Emmy-winning ones to animated ones.
